These children can be categories broadly into are four major types of special needs children:

1. Physical Disability: The child will suffer from any of these diseases such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, chronic asthma, epilepsy, etc.

2. Developmental Disability – down syndrome, autism, dyslexia, processing disorders

3. Behavioral/Emotional Disability – Attention Deficit Disorder, bi-polar, oppositional defiance disorder, etc.

4. Sensory Impaired – Blind, visually impaired, deaf, limited hearing

The disabilities can be identified by the gynecologist and obstetrician at the time of birth, general physician, healthcare provider or at a child development center.

How to identify child with special needs?

The child may find it difficult in learning, reading and writing, lack concentration, won’t be able to make friends. The other physically visible disabilities such as blind, irregular hands or legs are identified easily.

Try to visit a specialist who is near to the residence, this helps in easy travel along with the special needs child to the place, as the child is required to see the healthcare professional frequently. On the other hand your doctor has to be available in school sessions to analyze the child and help him perform better.
